Tilth is a composting app created to help young people in Cincinnati make composting part of their everyday lives. The project began with the question: How can a social media app encourage routine composting and build community among Cincinnati’s population of young adults? Research showed that many people want to live more sustainably but aren’t sure where to start, where to take their compost, or how to fit it into a busy routine. The name Tilth refers to the physical condition and quality of soil, especially how well it supports planting and growth. That idea connects to the app’s goal of helping composting habits take root. Tilth brings local resources together in one place, helping users find compost bins and sustainability events, track progress toward their composting goals, and share what they’re learning.
The project also explores how composting can create community. A feed and leaderboard section of the app give users a way to exchange experiences and see how small individual actions can add up. The visual identity uses bright colors, friendly illustrations inspired by Queen City Composting, and rounded interface elements to make the subject feel approachable. Together, the app’s features and visual system make composting feel practical to do locally and easier to sustain as a community.
